Alex Pall Knows How to Connect

Posted by SugarMusic on

During his interview with Andy Warhol’s Interview, Alex Pall opened up about the genesis of The Chainsmokers and what motivates the music and method behind their unique brand of electronic music. Pall met up with his full-time collaborator and other half of The Chainsmokers while DJing in New York City and according to Pall, the creative chemistry was immediate.

“I think we both initially knew what we brought to the table” Pall said of the duos early meetings. As the band grew they knew that to reach the level they desired would require full-time dedication and focus. The band met nearly everyday often putting in long hours as they worked to develop as collaborators and artist. The benefits began to show almost immediately. “People relate to our music on such a deeper level, and we want that to be the case more and more,” Pall says.

Part of this development led to the bands decision to directly contribute songwriting and vocals to the music they were creating, an anomaly among electronic artists. The band finds that this is a further way to connect with their audience. “We work with songwriters too but we write the songs with them—they’re about us,” said Paul of the bands decision to write and sing their own lyrics adding “It’s always different but it’s always us.”

This connection casts a wide net. Pall notes that, with Social Media, its easy for artists to see the demographic that their work is resonating with and Pall is seeing that this is a growing and diverse audience. Pall recognizes the importance of this. “[It’s] really cool because it shows that our music is transcending age in general.”

Between playing ever evolving live shows for increasingly large and diverse audiences and collaborating with big names in the industry such as Halsey. The Chainsmokers aren’t straying from the hard-work that got them where they are today Pall assures, adding “We’re at that point where we really need to nail down who we are today and make a cohesive body of work that illustrates that.”

The Chainsmokers – Seasoned “Newcomers”

Posted by SugarMusic on

Because of their chart-topping success, many might feel The Chainsmokers have been in the music scene for years. Their first foray into the top 10 was in early 2015 with their hit “Roses.” The duo of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart formed their musical partnership in 2012, and since that time, they have had a string of hits. Their hits have included “Paris,” “Something Just Like This” with Coldplay, and the Grammy-winning EDM tune, “Don’t Let Me Down” with Daya singing the lead. Their song “Closer” with Halsey stayed Number 1 on the charts for 12 weeks.

Those who think Taggart and Pall are content to rest on their laurels are mistaken. This duo sings songs that speak to the heart and they keep their music fresh and fun by not compromising their craft and focusing on what sounds good. Success is difficult to sustain, but The Chainsmokers replicate their success by churning out music that appeals to their generation and by performing at concerts and special events that appeal to their fan base. The duo recently performed at a special event sponsored by Hilton Hotels and American Express for their card members. At concerts, the pair showcases their creativity.

Their new song “Sick Boy” has a much darker tone than their previous work and signals their foray into a new music chapter. To keep their music relevant and fresh, Taggart and Pall produce music based on the current social and political reality. In an interview, they both expressed their concern that their music reflects their experiences and the experiences of their fans. Their fans are deeply involved in social media that quantifies a person’s personality and magnifies and propels what might seem meaningless into something extraordinary. Taggart and Pall want to make music that resonates with people and how they view themselves and how others view them.

One winning formula for the duo is they do not focus on the music charts because they do not want the charts dictating where they want to go in the future. Because they feel they have a lot to say, Taggart and Pall wish to continue to push themselves and take calculated risks to step out of their comfort zone. They keep making music that makes people feel good.
